As the fast development of the transportation and information technology, travelers can reach any tourism destinations; even in the farthest place in the world. This the fact that tourism is the biggest industry in the world today, and the nature tourism is the segment that grows most quickly. It is because the people want to explore the nature and experience the sensationof being in the different side of the world.

However, this kind of tourism may not impact the environment of the nature. Ecotourism is created as the response to the new nature appreciation that is always increasing. It is a kind of travel ethic that demand the tourists participate in keeping the nature.

The Definition of Ecotourism

The definition of Ecotourism as adopted by Nature Conservancy from the World Conservation Union is:

“Environmentally responsible travel to natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and accompanying cultural features, both past and present) that promote conservation, have a low visitor impact and provide for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local peoples.”

The fact is most nature tourism destinations don’t apply ecotourism principles today, and they are not sustainable too. Ecotourism isn’t same with the emphasis of the conservation, traveler responsibility, education, and also the active participation of the community. The more specific ecotourism characteristics are such as:

  • Conscientious and havingvisitor behavior that brings low impact.
  • To be sensitive and appreciate the biodiversity and also the local cultures.
  • Supporting the efforts of local conservation.
  • Giving sustainable advantages to the local communities
  • Taking the participation of local people to decide something about the nature or environment.
  • Giving some education to the travelers and also the local people of the tourism destination.

Without appropriate management and planning for the tourism, the sensitive areas of the nature will be threatened for the tourism increasing; especially about the local cultures and also the ecosystems. Great environmental degradation could happen as the increasing of tourists visiting the areas with sensitive ecology. Besides, the local people and their cultural traditions will be harmed as the great increasing of visitors and the wealth. Currency exchange rates, climate as well as political and social fluctuation will be overly dependent to the tourism as the risky business.

On the other hand, the tourism growth also can make great opportunities for local people and also the conservation. By applying Ecotourism, we can provide the important revenues for the national parks protection and also other natural areas that can be foundin another place.

Additionally, the economic development of local people can also be good effect of ecotourism because of the additional options to generate income. Besides, ecotourism also can help improving theeducation level and involvement among the travelers, so they can be more enthusiast and become the more effective conservation agents.

Ecotourism itself has been applied in Lombok. As a beautiful islands with amazing beauty of beaches and the natural resources, Lombok is very potential.
